What kind of venues have we played at?We have played at a wide range of venues, from Stately Homes to Private Homes, from Churches to Gardens, from Theme settings to marquees. Each has its own considerations when performing music. What to consider about music and the venueThe acoustics of a venue has a major influence of the way music is performed and the positioning of the musicians for optimum effect. Classical music is normally played un-amplified. With good acoustics, almost anything is possible. With less than ideal acoustics, careful thought must be given to the positioning of the musicians relative to the guests. For example, when playing outdoors with a string quartet, it is often best to position the musicians close to a sound reflecting outside wall, or on a raised part of the garden. In a marquee, the musicians should be positioned as central to the guests as possible. Sound is absorbed in a marquee, and doesn't travel far, so one doesn't want the musicians at a far end, so some guests hear them well and others not at all. The number of guests expected can influence the choice of group. A classical guitarist or a duo may work with a relatively small number of guests, whilst a quartet can cater from 6 to 200 people. Jazz & Folk bands usually employ amplification, meaning that sound absorbing acoustics are less critical. however, the opposite can be a problem. Very sound reflective halls can make it difficult to hear music and callers, when guests are dancing and laughing. Sometimes the positioning of padded chairs, closing of curtains, or having a carpeted area adjacent to the dance area can make a world of difference.
